It took some time for me to determine exactly why I didn't like this book. After all, I deeply loved Shardik, set in the same world, and Adams writes some damn good why didn't Maia do it for me.
In re-reading, Shardik, I realized what was missing in Maia: Maia was a character that observed and experienced, but never presence triggered major events, but only seemingly by 4/5.
